Kerry's Story, Break Relief Personal Support Worker

I joined Frantec on 1 July, and from day one “everyone’s very approachable.” Being able to call or ask in person when I’m unsure means I never feel judged for learning, which makes me a better carer.

Nine years in special educational needs taught me a great deal, including how to stay calm under pressure and adapt to each person, but my role here is about “enriching their day.” It starts with trust: entering a client’s home means entering their space, so I listen, read the cues and let them lead. Then I go “thinking outside the box,” joining local groups and linking with organisations like Mencap to open doors to experiences people might not have considered.

‘”The most rewarding moment so far was watching a client choose her own activities, pay for herself and join a team game with younger people for nearly two hours.”’
– Kerry, Break Relief Personal Support Worker

When we shared a thumbs-up across the room, I knew: “my work is done.” Moments like that, along with the applause and smiles at community sessions, are why I love this job. Frantec gives me the support and freedom to try new approaches, reflect on what works and keep learning. Feeling genuinely supported myself means I can help others feel the same.
